A Message from the Alumni Board President:

Dear fellow alumni,

I’m excited to welcome you to a new academic year and to my first year as president of the Boston College School of Social Work Alumni Board! As we begin another year, I’m especially looking forward to finding new ways to connect our alumni community with one another, with the School, and with the students who will soon join us as fellow alumni.

One of my goals as Alumni Board president is to help build a stronger sense of connection across our BCSSW community. Our alumni are doing incredible work in so many different settings and communities, and I hope we can create more opportunities throughout the year to learn from one another, share our experiences, and stay connected to BC.

We also want to make it easier for alumni to get involved—whether it’s volunteering as a mentor, participating in mock interviews, joining an Alumni Board event, speaking with students about your area of practice, or simply sharing your ideas and experiences. There are many ways to contribute—and we would love to see more of you involved! The Alumni Board is always looking for ways to create meaningful opportunities for our community, and your participation and feedback help shape what those opportunities look like.

I also want to extend a special welcome to the Class of 2026 as you officially join the BCSSW alumni community! Graduation is an exciting milestone, but we know that the transition from student to social work professional can also bring plenty of questions and new challenges. Please know that your connection to BCSSW doesn’t end at graduation. Our alumni community is here as a resource for you whether you are looking for professional advice, hoping to build your network, navigating your first years in the field, or simply looking to stay connected to the people and community that helped shape your journey. We hope you’ll reach out, get involved, and consider the Alumni Board a resource as you take your next steps.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as Alumni Board president, and I’m looking forward to working alongside our Board and the broader BCSSW community this year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at sswalumni@bc.edu with thoughts, ideas, or opportunities for collaboration.

We’d love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Cristina Goverman, MSW ‘15

New Faculty: SuMing Sullivan

SuMing Sullivan MSW '11, will begin this fall as an assistant professor of clinical practice after teaching part time at BCSSW for several years. She strives to accompany students on their journeys to becoming professional social workers, walking alongside them during their trials and triumphs.

As she tells her students: “It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about being the expert. It’s about going with people.”
